Community, Ritual, and the Perfect Balance of Hot and Cold
On Monday, we gathered our community across all three of our locations for an evening that perfectly embodied what Sea Scrub Sauna is all about: authentic Nordic traditions, coastal connection, and the magic that happens when people come together to mark life’s natural rhythms.
Three Locations, One Shared Experience
From Margate Beach to Whitstable Harbour and our new home at Macknade in Faversham, our saunas were filled with the warmth of community spirit. For three hours, guests moved through an experience designed to honour the turning of the seasons in true Nordic style.
The evening began at 6pm with authentic Aufguss ceremonies – a tradition where essential oil-infused steam and rhythmic towel movements create an almost meditative intensity of heat. Watching our practitioners work their magic, you could feel the stress of everyday life melting away alongside the blustery chill of September outside.
One of the highlights was the vihta-making workshop, where everyone got hands-on with crafting their own birch whisks. It’s a simple but satisfying process, and you can really feel the difference when you use something you’ve made yourself in the sauna.
The Magic of Seasonal Ritual
“The whole evening was beautiful. We had old & new sauna goers and the beauty of not having to clock watch and worry about the time. So it was magical to watch everyone really relax into the evening. Seeing some newbies’ apprehension build into confidence over the course of the 3 hours was such a privilege to see. I had one girl who said the sauna wasn’t for her, well needless to say after the second time in she was sitting through a whole Aufguss session & loving it”

As darkness fell and we gathered around the firepits, there was a palpable sense that we’d created something meaningful together. A moment of pause, reflection, and connection as we collectively welcomed autumn.
Looking Ahead: A Year of Seasonal Celebrations
The response to our Equinox celebration was incredible, and so we’re excited to continue our seasonal gatherings throughout the year:
- Winter Solstice – embracing the longest night
- Spring Equinox – celebrating renewal and new beginnings
- Summer Solstice – marking the peak of light and warmth
Each celebration will honour the unique energy of its season. While maintaining the authentic Nordic traditions that make these experiences so transformative.
